MeasurEing out

I know, I know, don't tell me I know gardening , at least the planting part is over except for the fall garden....anywho...I have started a new garden series....planning, designing, and of course planting a garden....

this is the second part....the task of measuring the new garden spot...

 

now that ya picked that spot out,

 

 

the next step really is their anything ya want to keep in that spot

like in my new spot, I have a hibiscus and peach tree that

 I want to keep plus a few iris( I know I could easily move the iris)

 

next thing ya need to do is grab a few supplies

 

 

measuring tape

preferably the 100 foot one, but

as ya can see I used what I had

25 foot

 

 

sharpened pencils

 

 

paper

again preferably graph paper

as usual I used what I had on hand

( so like using what I have on hand)

 

take all three and write down your measurements

on paper and draw out your new garden spot...

 

make sure to include the plants that ya decide to keep in their spots

or that building that is in the area of the new garden

make sure your area has the amount of sun to the plants ya want to plant in

your new garden.

Starting a garden

So, ya want to have a garden and don't really know where to start. This is going to be a series of starting, designing , planning a planting a garden....

                       Their are things to consider when starting , Planning a garden
                                 Questions that ya must ask?
                                           how much space do I have to have a garden?
              Even though , ya live in a small place ,ya can still grow plants in a container
                          or use the square foot method of growing !

                                          Do I want just a flower garden?
                    
                                            Do I want have some fresh veggies?

                                        Do I want to have some fresh herbs?

              ya can grow, flowers, veggies and herbs together, ya If so ,What kind of fruit , trees, or shrubs?                            

                       
                                   

               
                                       

Pumpkins, Pumpkins

It seems they are everywhere.....besides all of the flavors of pumpkin...spice....I grew sugar pie pumpkins in my garden....So I harvested one, Needless to say I might have let it set too long on that one,....well I harvested another one...I so wanted to make this pie pumpkin into something other then a decoration.....

 

after ya harvest your pumpkin, or maybe ya got it from the store

anywho....washed and dry it off

 

 

cut in half

 

 

now

clean out the pumpkin,

clean all of the seeds and the strings

 

 

 

the guts

 

now

 

 

place both pumpkin halves

( if they both fit)

in a pan with some water

and bake for 90 minutes or

until fork tender

( I bake mine at 350 degrees)

 

 

After baking until fork tender

let cool

then cube or scrape or

 just peel the rind off

Sorry I didn't get any pics of this

then using a food processor

and puree the cooked pumpkin

Feel free to add cinnamon, or nutmeg or both

and put in a freezer bag

to make that pumpkin pie, or

maybe pumpkin bread

now ya have pumpkin puree in the freezer

Cocoa's corners

I thought ya might enjoy seeing each area of the garden and what I thought about how each area did for the year....and maybe some ideas about next year...
First off is Cocoas corners

             what can I say about this area,....hmmmmm I have since pulled up the tomatoes planted here...For the most part, they did produce a few tomatoes, I don't remember exactly what kind of tomatoes I planted, ( I will try and do better next year) I know I planted some better boys,( one of which was not), a couple of yellow tomatoes, brandywine tomatoes

                                                Hello there shadow,
                          the tire had very rich soil, compost! that's why , I had 4 tomatoes and a couple
                     of peppers planted here....the tomatoes did produce a few, the banana pepper
                        plant is still planted and still producing....I also had 4 different types of
                                    zucchini planted around the tire....for the most part the yellow
                            zucchini did great ,but not like last year

I haven't yet decided what I want to do with all of these

 maybe pickled tomatoes

Three sisters

Today vlog is about planting the three sisters way, by planting corn,pole beans, and squash.
First you plant your corn( I used canna bulbs and corn), then when your corn is about 1 inch high plant pole beans close to the corn...plant the squash( pumpkin ) in the middle of your patch....

memorial day complaint

This past memorial day I visited the graves...I know I haven't done this every year in the past few years as I didn't have the money on the flowers....
now to the complaint....I have visited this cemetery before ...and have only seen maybe a couple of flags on these veteran's graves....Every cemetery I went to had flags on the veteran's graves except for this one.....This is in Wright County,Missouri......Oak Grove .....

A garden festival

feeding the hummers....

In this post will be about feeding the hummingbirds, those fast tiny wizards of the sky,gardens....
I seen my first hummer of the season on April 29,2018...I marched myself in the house and then cleaned the hummingbird feeders .I made my sugar water ,then put the feeders up....

To make homemade humming bird food. take 1/4 cup of sugar to 1 cup of warm water....

I have since seen orioles as well at both of my feeders....

in this vlog I do use 4 cups of warm water and 1 cup of sugar plus alittle food coloring in which I only put the food coloring in the first time...

I know I needed to clean my feeders better, they have been exposed to the elements of nature....so that's why they looked like they do....

transplanting tigerlilies

This will be my first time transplanting tiger lilies. So I thought I would show you how step by step.
First off dig a hole( duh), then go and dig up some tiger lilies( in which I so needed to divide), then plant them in the hole that you just dug.....I know pretty simple...oh yea ,then water it good.....

canna bulb planting...

I just love the canna tall stalks....and the short ones as well...the one thing I could say I hate is digging them up in the fall of the year ,every year...last year I tried here in the Ozarks to leave them planted....they didn't make it...We actually had a winter....so once again its Spring sorta of here in the Ozarks ,so planting the cannas again I go...

composting 101

This is kinda of a yucky subject---veggie scraps, manure( cow,horse,rabbit) but to the avid gardener its well like magic...you put your veggie scraps( peelings veggies gone bad, etc), manure, egg shells, newspaper( shredded), in a spot and t hen in a few months black gold...it like you hit the jackpot of sorts, for your garden...rich soil....plants, gardens love it.....

this vlog I talk about composting 101 at least I what I know,...you just have to remember that no oil, grease or anything of that nature goes in your compost pile,bucket, or whatever or....smells, varmits will be visiting your compost, of course you do want those wiggly worms in your compost....

Todays blog...Jiffy Greenhouse...planted some peppers, I'm using the 36 puck one...
I planted both green bell peppers and jalapenos....
I planted these outside, due to the nice weather we had the other day...I cant say that about today...potential frost tonight...not typical the weather we have, but then again maybe so...It is  the Ozarks....

Chicken Math

I first got baby chickens earlier in the year due to not having any bantams.....I got 4 at our local orchlens (tractor supply/farm store)....then on to the swap meet, in which we were there to look, not get anything besides it was cold and yucky outside...I /We wanted to take some rabbits there but decided not to because of the cold.....I/we picked up two D'Uccles( a pair), then stopped at orschlens again coming back from doctors office...they had baby chicks on sale...I picked up a maran,cochin,and a fry pan special chick....so I have a total of 8 chicks...
Today since it was nice (77 degrees) decided to put them outside for the day.
